Breastfeeding and Medications


The benefits of breastfeeding may outweigh the risks of exposure to most therapeutic agents.

Studies have not been conclusive, nor have not been available because not all drugs are excreted the same in human milk. Some medications have not been studied or are not available.

There is limited data on anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, and antipsychotic medications

There is lack of support for use of drugs that increase milk production (galactagogues) and herbal products.

There are limited studies in the use of methadone, pain medication, and other controlled substances.

There is limited evidence with the administration of vaccines with breastfeeding.
