The Most Common Cause of Vomiting in Infants and ChildrenGastroesophageal reflux is a common condition seen in newborns and young infants. The passage of stomach contents back into the esophagus known as regurgitation or reflux. Often this condition is self-limiting and resolves before 12 months of age. “Spitting” in young infants can be reduced by offering smaller volume feeds more frequently and allowing a minimum of 30 minutes of burping and keeping infant in upright position following feeds. If this does not reduce symptoms, feeds may be thickened. In more severe cases, medication such as Zantac is given.

Acute gastroenteritis is the most common cause of vomiting in children. Viruses are the most common reason followed by bacterial and parasites. Hydration and rest is the mainstay treatment of viral illnesses. Dehydration may be present in children urinate less than twice in a day with acute illness, do not produce tears with crying and/or appear to have dry/cracked mucous membranes.
