What is the Flu?

What is InfluenzaInfluenza (flu) is a virus that causes a respiratory infection. The flu is highly contagious and can spread rapidly by inhaling the virus when someone coughs or sneezes. You can also touch a hard surface infected by the flu virus then rub your eyes, nose or mouth.

The flu presents with a rapid onset of fever with body aches and chills. Other symptoms include runny nose, cough, stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhea. Fever may last up to 7 days with the flu and symptoms may last for 2 weeks.

The flu can be diagnosed through a rapid flu test here at our office. If symptoms are less than 48 hours, Tamiflu may be prescribed. Tamiflu is an antiviral medication that decreases the length and symptoms of the flu. Plenty of fluids and rest are important.

If you are exposed to the flu and has been less than 48 hours, your child may be tested for the flu and given a prevention dose of Tamiflu to reduce risk their risk of infection.

Prevention is key in preventing the spread of the flu. Always wash hands and avoid touching face. Have your children cough or sneeze into tissue. Do not share drinks or food. Give your children hugs instead of kisses around the mouth. Vaccinate as early as possible during the flu season.
